Stonework, Limestone & Hill Country Masonry

Stonework that reads as Hill Country at first glance — limestone, flagstone, and native boulder work sourced from regional quarries.

What it is

Stonework — built right.

Stone is the Hill Country signature material. Dry-stack limestone walls, flagstone patios, mortared veneer on outdoor fireplaces, native boulder accents, columns, water features. Stone is also unforgiving — bad stonework reads as obviously off, good stonework looks like the property always had it. We source from regional quarries (TX Soil & Stone in Bulverde, San Antonio Masonry & Steel, Site One) so the color and texture match the land.

Hill Country Relevance

Local conditions.

Hill Country limestone, Lueders, Oklahoma flagstone, Pennsylvania bluestone, and native boulder accents are the regional palette. We avoid out-of-region stone that doesn't read right in this light.

Materials & Process

How we build it.

  1. Stone selection — regional quarry visits when the project warrants it. Color, texture, and size graded for the home palette.
  2. Substrate prep — engineered footing for structural stone, leveled base for flagstone.
  3. Dry-stack vs. mortared decision based on application.
  4. Joint work — natural fit on dry-stack, mortared joints tinted to match stone on veneer work.
  5. Sealing where appropriate — limestone benefits from a breathable sealer in high-traffic zones.
  6. Native boulder placement: read the grain, set the show face, partial bury for permanence.

Common questions.

What kind of limestone do you use?

Hill Country quarried limestone is the default — it matches the surrounding cliffs and structures. Lueders, Texas pearl, and Oklahoma flagstone come into play depending on the project. We pick stone in person when the project is large enough to warrant the trip.

How long do limestone walls last?

Properly built dry-stack limestone walls last 50-100+ years. The walls we maintain on older Hill Country ranches were often built 80-100 years ago without modern mortar. Stonework is one of the few landscape elements that outlasts the house.

Can you match existing stonework on a property?

Yes, when the original stone source is still available. Hill Country quarry yards stock the regional palettes, so matching is usually possible. If the original stone is no longer quarried, we'll show you the closest match and explain the trade-off.

What's the cost difference between dry-stack and mortared stonework?

Mortared stonework typically costs 30-50% more than dry-stack for the same linear footage — more material, more labor, slower install. Dry-stack works for garden walls and decorative accents; mortared is required for structural applications.
