Artificial Turf — built right.
Artificial turf done right is invisible from 8 feet away and works for 10-15 years. Done wrong, it pools water, smells in summer, and starts ripping at the seams in year three. The difference is base preparation, drainage, edging, and infill quality. We install premium polyethylene turf with proper base, drainage channels, and edge restraint. The visible turf is the last decision — what's under it determines how long it lasts.
Local conditions.
San Antonio and Hill Country summers run 100-105°F for weeks. Cheap turf gets hot enough to burn pets and bare feet — premium turf with proper infill stays usable. UV degradation is the real failure mode in our region; we install only turf rated for Texas UV.
How we build it.
- Excavation: remove existing sod and 3-4" of soil to make room for the base.
- Base: compacted crushed limestone, 3-4" depth, leveled and rolled.
- Drainage: integrated channel under the base where slope dictates, weep edges at low points.
- Underlayment: shock pad optional for pet/play applications.
- Turf install: premium polyethylene fiber, 35-50mm pile, UV stabilized.
- Seams: hand-stitched and adhesive-sealed for invisible joints.
- Infill: silica sand or antimicrobial pet infill brushed in.
- Edge restraint: bender board, steel, or hardscape edge — never just rolled under.
